Here is How To Make Slow Cooked Asian Pork

Prepare the ingredients: Chop the garlic, grate the ginger, measure the liquid ingredients for the marinade.

Step 1. Mix together the tamari sauce, tomato paste, maple syrup, garlic, ginger, and sesame oil in a ceramic or glass bowl.

Step 2. Place the pork into the bowl with the marinade and use a spoon or turn the pork over a few times in the marinade to ensure that it is completely covered – marinate for at least 4 hours up to overnight which is best.

Step 3. Place the pork and the marinade into a slow cooker. Cover and cook for 5 to 6 hours on low heat.

Step 4. Once the pork has been cooked through, shred it with two forks or slice it and toss it in the sauce.

TIP! Do you prefer more sauce? Mix ½ cup of chicken broth with 2 teaspoons of flour to make a slurry. Add it to the juices in the slow cooker after shredding the pork.

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

Boneless pork roast. The best meat to use to make slow-cooked Asian pork is a boneless center rib roast, rib end or pork tenderloin. These cuts of meat contain enough fat for flavor but are still fairly lean.

Most slow cooker pork recipes call for pork shoulder, and you can use that in this recipe, we prefer leaner cuts of pork such as the ones mentioned above.

Note: pork tenderloins usually weigh between 1 and 2 pounds. It will make a smaller amount of pork, and the cooking time will need to be adjusted to about 3 to 4 hours.

Substitute pork with boneless chicken thighs and adjust the cooking time to 3 hours.

Tamari sauce is a Japanese fermented sauce made with soybeans and tastes very similar to soy sauce. It is usually wheat free, and has a more robust flavor.

Substitute tamari sauce with one to one of soy sauce or coconut aminos.

Arrowroot powder is used to thicken the sauce.

Maple syrup is a natural sweetner that used to sweeten the sauce in this recipe.

Substitute maple syrup with an equal amount of honey, brown rice syrup or agave nectar.

Serve slow-cooked Asian pork with a side of your favorite stir-fried vegetables such as a mixture of broccoli, zucchini, bell peppers, and steamed rice.

Storing and Using Leftovers

This is a recipe that you are going to want to make a few extra helpings. It has so many uses and tastes better the next day.

Store leftover Slow cooker Asian BBQ pork in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 days.

Reheat it on top of the stove in a saucepan, in the oven at low (325 to 350) heat or the microwave.

Serve leftovers piled onto your favorite roll topped with coleslaw, stuff it in an egg roll wrapper with sauteed cabbage, wrap it in a tortilla, add it to a salad or a bowl of rice and diced stir-fried veggies.

Instructions

Notes

If you prefer more sauce, make a slurry of ½ cup of chicken broth and 2 teaspoons of flour. Mix it into the sauce in the slow cooker and stir until it has thickened. Add the shredded pork and toss.
